Das Thema des 4. Festivals für Digital Arts and Cultures in der Stadt
Wien ist URBAN HACKING.
URBAN HACKING
Die Stadt Wien steht in langer Tradition von Intervention und Aktion im
öffentlichen Raum. paraflows09 möchte mit dem Festival 2009 an diese
Auseinandersetzung mit dem öffentlichen und urbanen Lebensraum anknüpfen
und zugleich die Rolle der digitalen Medien bei der Erforschung,
Hinterfragung und Gestaltung von städtischer Infrastruktur beleuchten.
Wir sind interessiert an Projekten zur Nutzung, Intervention, Hacking und
Bespielung von urbaner Öffentlichkeit. Wie können Freiräume geschaffen,
entdeckt und genutzt werden? Wie verhält sich künstlich organisierter Raum
zu natürlichem? Wem gehört Stadt/Straße/Netz und ihre Infrastruktur?
Welche Rolle spielt Technologie im Urbanraum? Wie können soziale
Strukturen gestaltet und umgestaltet werden? Wie kann der öffentliche Raum
durch "urban hacking" neu gedacht, inszeniert und gelebt werden?
Inwieweit kann das Aufbrechen des öffentlichen Raums helfen Protest zu
herrschenden Zuständen, der Werbung oder Konsumverhalten zu manifestieren?
Auch das Netz als öffentliche Infrastruktur mit seinen individuellen
Ausstülpungen, Möglichkeiten und
Mechanismen ist mittlerweile ein wichtiger Bestandteil von
gesellschaftlicher Kommunikation und hat den öffentlichen Realraum um den
Hyperraum erweitert. Wie sich diese parallelen Realitätsebenen
organisieren und welche Bewegungsfreiheit dem Individuum zur Verfügung
steht, ist nur eine der Fragestellungen zu paraflows09 URBAN HACKING.

Die Einreichunterlagen müssen folgende Informationen enthalten:
1) Name, Institution (falls vorhanden), Adresse, E-mail, Telefon, Website/s
2) Eingereichte Arbeit: Titel, Medium, Autor/Innen, Produktionsjahr
3) Projektbeschreibung maximal 1 DIN A4 Seite
4) Technische Erläuterungen, Raum-/ Systemvoraussetzungen (Hardware,
Operating System, additional Software)
5) CD mit zumindest 1-2 hochauflösenden druckfähigen Bildern
6) Biografie/n
7) Dokumentation früherer Projekte (Angabe der Website/s ist ausreichend)
Sprache: Es werden nur Arbeiten in den Sprachen Deutsch oder Englisch
bzw. mit entsprechenden Untertiteln akzeptiert. Arbeiten in anderen
Sprachen muss eine Textliste in Deutsch oder Englisch beigelegt sein. Wir
laden auch ausdrücklich ProduzentInnen außerhalb Österreichs zum
Wettbewerb ein.

The topic of the fourth festival for digital arts and cultures in the city of Vienna is URBAN HACKING.
URBAN HACKING
The city of Vienna has a long tradition of art performances and interventions in public spaces. This year’s festival paraflows09 would like to connect these approaches to public and urban spaces while at the same time comment on the roles of digital media by exploring, challenging, and constructing urban infrastructure.
We are interested in projects that investigate the use of urban space for performances, the hacking of and intervention with urban publics. How can areas of freedom be created, discovered and be put to use? How do regulated spaces work as opposed to the unsupervised? Whom does the city/street/net and their infrastructure belong to?
What role does technology play in the urban space? How can social structures be designed and remodelled? How can ‘urban hacking’ redefine urban space, make us think about and live in it along different lines? To what extend can the redefinition of public spaces help to manifest protest against the establishment, advertisement, and consumerist societies?
The net, a public infrastructure with all its alcoves, possibilities and mechanisms, has now also become an important instrument for society to communicate. By adding hyper space into the equation internet has expanded the public real spaces. How these parallel levels of reality organise themselves and what freedom of movement they grant the individual person is one of the issues of paraflows09 URBAN HACKING.

2) submitted work: title, medium, author/artist, year of production
3) work description: 1 DIN A4-page maximum
4) technical explanation, room/space requirements (hardware, operating system, additional software)
5) biographies
7) documentation of earlier projects, e.g. a link to your website
Language: all submissions have to be in English or in German or need to have subtitles in one of the two languages. Works in any other language have to include a text list in either German or English. We especially encourage international submissions.
